Then in the mid-19th century successive rules boomed by the French until it was colonized. Hard work to oppose the French eventually led to their removal from the country in the mid-20th century, leaving a nation divided politically into two countries. Bitter fighting between the two sides continued during the Vietnam War. By 2000, it had established diplomatic relations with most nations. Vietnam got independence from France in 2nd Sep 1945. The Vietnam War destroyed much of the economy of Vietnam. Upon taking power, the Government created a planned economy for the nation. GDP growth averaged 6.8% per year from 1997 to 2004.
