| Venezuela is located at Northern South America, bordering the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, between Colombia and Guyana. In the early 1800s, Spain, South American colonies began a fight for independence. Venezuela was the first Spanish colony to demand independence from Spain. On July 5, 1811, they declared their freedom; however, they were not truly independent until 1821. After a small period of being a segment of a country called Gran Colombia, Venezuela drafted a separate constitution in 1830. Jose Antonio Paez became the first president of a new Venezuelan republic in 1831. Venezuela remains highly dependent on oil revenues, which account for roughly 90% of export earnings, more than 50% of the federal budget revenues, and around 30% of GDP.
