| Info |
| Portugal, officially the Portuguese Republic, is a country on the Iberian Peninsula. Located in southwestern Europe, Portugal is the westernmost country of mainland Europe and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south and by Spain to the north and east. The Atlantic archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira are also part of Portugal. In terms of size, Portugal has a total area of 92,391 sq km which is slightly smaller than Indiana. It has 91,951 sq km land area and 440 sq km water area. Following its heyday as a world power during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal lost much of its wealth and status with the destruction of Lisbon in a 1755 earthquake, occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, and the independence in 1822 of Brazil as a colony. A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy; for most of the next six decades, repressive governments ran the country. The population of Portugal is approximately 10,676,910. The population density of it is 114/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 0.305%. Most of Portugal's people belong to Roman Catholic religion. The official and most common languages of those people are Portuguese and Mirandese. It has only homogeneous Mediterranean people. Portugal has become a diversified and increasingly service-based economy since joining the European Community in 1986. Over the past two decades, successive governments have privatized many state-controlled firms and liberalized key areas of the economy, including the financial and telecommunications sectors. Portugal's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $230.6 billion with GDP of $23,464 per capita. |
