| Paraguay, officially the Republic of, is one of the only two landlocked countries in South America (along with Bolivia). It lies on both banks of the Paraguay River, bordering Argentina to the south and southwest, Brazil to the east and northeast, and Bolivia to the northwest, and is located in the center of South America, the country is sometimes referred to as Corazon de America – Heart of (South) America along with Bolivia and Brazil. In terms of size, Paraguay has a total area of 406,750 sq km which is slightly smaller than California. It has 397,300 sq km land area and 9,450 sq km water area. In the disastrous War of the Triple Alliance (1865-70) – between Paraguay and Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay – Paraguay lost two-thirds of all adult males and much of its territory. It stagnated economically for the next half century. In the Chaco War of 1932-35, Paraguay won large, economically important areas from Bolivia. The population of Paraguay is approximately 6,831,306. The population density of it is 15 /sq km. It has a population growth rate of 2.39%. Most of Paraguay's people belong to Roman Catholic religion.
