Lithuania, officially the Republic of Lithuania, History of Lithuania , is a country defined as being part of Northern Europe. Situated along the south-eastern shore of the Baltic Sea, sharing borders with Latvia to the north, Belarus to the southeast, Poland, and the Russian exclave of the Kaliningrad Oblast to the southwest. Lithuania is a member of NATO and of the European Union. In terms of size, Lithuania has a total area of 65,300 sq km which is about slightly larger than West Virginia. Lithuanian lands were united under MINDAUGAS in 1236; over the next century, through alliances and conquest, Lithuania extended its territory to include most of present-day Belarus and Ukraine. By the end of the 14th century Lithuania was the largest state in Europe. An alliance with Poland in 1386 led the two countries into a union through the person of a common ruler. In 1569, Lithuania and Poland formally united into a single dual state, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The population of Lithuania is approximately 3,565,205. The population density of it is 52/sq km. It has a population growth rate of -0.284%. Most of Lithuania's people belong to Roman Catholic religion. The official and most common language of those people is Lithuanian. It has 83.4% of Lithuanian and rests are Polish, Russian and other people. Lithuania, the Baltic state that has conducted the most trade with Russia, has grown rapidly since rebounding from the 1998 Russian financial crisis. Unemployment fell to 3.2% in 2007 while wages continued to grow at double digit rates, contributing to rising inflation. Exports and imports also grew strongly, and the current account deficit rose to nearly 15% of GDP in 2007. Lithuania's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2008 estimate is approximately $48, 132 billion with GDP of $14, 273 per capita.
