Info
Laos, officially the Lao People's Democratic Republic, is a landlocked country in southeast Asia, bordered by Burma (Myanmar) and China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south, and Thailand to the west. Laos traces its history to the Kingdom of Lan Xang or Land of a Million Elephants, which existed from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century. In terms of size, Laos has a total area of 236,800 sq km which is slightly larger than Utah. It has 230,800 sq km land area and 6,000 sq km water area. Modern-day Laos has its roots in the ancient Lao kingdom of Lan Xang, established in the 14th Century under King FA NGUM. For 300 years Lan Xang had influence reaching into present-day Cambodia and Thailand, as well as over all of what is now Laos. After centuries of gradual decline, Laos came under the domination of Siam (Thailand) from the late 18th century until the late 19th century when it became part of French Indochina. The population of Lao is approximately 6,677,534. The population density of it is 25/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 2.344%. Most of Lao's people belong to Buddhist religion. The official and most common language of those people is Lao. It has 55% of Lao and rests are Khmu and Hmong people. The government of Laos, one of the few remaining one-party Communist states, began decentralizing control and encouraging private enterprise in 1986. The results, starting from an extremely low base, were striking – growth averaged 6% per year in 1988-2007 except during the short-lived drop caused by the Asian financial crisis beginning in 1997. Lao's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2006 estimate is approximately $13.75 billion with GDP of $2,200 per capita.
