| Info |
| Iceland, officially the Republic of Iceland is a country in northern Europe, comprising the island of Iceland and its outlying islets in the North Atlantic Ocean between the rest of Europe and Greenland. In terms of size, Iceland has a total area of 103,000 sq km which is slightly smaller than Kentucky. It has 100,250 sq km land area and 2,750 sq km water area. Settled by Norwegian and Celtic (Scottish and Irish) immigrants during the late 9th and 10th centuries A.D., Iceland boasts the world's oldest functioning legislative assembly, the Althing, established in 930. Independent for over 300 years, Iceland was subsequently ruled by Norway and Denmark. The population of Iceland is approximately 304,367. The population density of it is 3.1/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 0.783%. Most of Iceland's people belong to Lutheran Church of Iceland religion. Official and most common language of those people is Icelandic. It has 94% of homogeneous mixture of descendants of Norse and Celts and 6% of foreign origin people. Iceland's Scandinavian-type economy is basically capitalistic, yet with an extensive welfare system (including generous housing subsidies), low unemployment, and remarkably even distribution of income. In the absence of other natural resources (except for abundant geothermal power), the economy depends heavily on the fishing industry, which provides 70% of export earnings and employs 6% of the work force. Iceland's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2005 estimate is approximately $12.172 billion with GDP of $40,277 per capita. |
