Hong Kong, officially the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, is one of two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China, the other being Macau. The territory lies on the eastern side of the Pearl River Delta, bordering Guangdong province in the north and facing the South China Sea in the east, west and south. Beginning as a trading port in the 19th century, Hong Kong has developed into one of the world's leading financial centers. In terms of size, Hong Kong has a total area of 1,092 sq km which is six times the size of Washington, DC. It has 1,042 sq km land area and 50 sq km water area. Occupied by the UK in 1841, Hong Kong was formally ceded by China the following year; various adjacent lands were added later in the 19th century. Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and the UK on 19 December 1984, Hong Kong became the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 1 July 1997. The population of Hong Kong is approximately 7,018,636. The population density of it is 6,352/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 0.532%. Most of Hong Kong's people belong to eclectic mixture of local religions. Official and most common language of those people is Spanish. It has 94% of Chinese and rest are Filipino and other people. Hong Kong has a free market economy highly dependent on international trade. In 2006, the total value of goods and services trade, including the sizable share of exports, was equivalent to 400% of GDP. The territory has become increasingly integrated with mainland China over the past few years through trade, tourism, and financial links. Hong Kong's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $292.8 billion with GDP of $41,994 per capita.
