| Greece, officially the Hellenic Republic is a country in southeastern Europe, situated on the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula. It has borders with Albania, Bulgaria and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to the north, and Turkey to the east. The Aegean Sea lies to the east and south of mainland Greece, while the Ionian Sea lies to the west. Both parts of the Eastern Mediterranean basin feature a vast number of islands. In terms of size, Greece has a total area of 131,940 sq km which is slightly smaller than Alabama. It has 130,800 sq km land area and 1,140 sq km water area. Greece achieved independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between supporters of the king and Communist rebels. The population of Greece is approximately 10,722,816. The population density of it is 84/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 0.146%. Most of Greece's people belong to Greek Orthodox religion. Official and most common language of those people is Greek. It has 93% of Greek people and 7% of other people. Greece has a capitalist economy with the public sector accounting for about 40% of GDP and with per capita GDP at least 75% of the leading euro-zone economies. Tourism provides 15% of GDP. Immigrants make up nearly one-fifth of the work force, mainly in agricultural and unskilled jobs. Greece's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2005 estimate is approximately $1066 million with GDP of $38,200 per capita. |
