| Gibraltar is a British overseas territory located near the southernmost tip of the Iberian Peninsula overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar. The territory shares a border with Spain to the north. Gibraltar has historically been an important base for the British Armed Forces and is the site of a Royal Navy base. In terms of size, Gibraltar has a total area of 6.5 sq km which is a little less than one half the size of Rhode Island. Strategically important, Gibraltar was reluctantly ceded to Great Britain by Spain in the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht; the British garrison was formally declared a colony in 1830. In a referendum held in 1967, Gibraltarians voted overwhelmingly to remain a British dependency. The first permanent settlement was built by the Almohad Sultan Abd al-Mu'min, who ordered the construction of a fortification on the Rock, the remains of which are still present as the Moorish Castle. The population of Gibraltar is approximately 28,002. The population density of it is 4,290/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 0.125%. Most of Gibraltar's people belong to Roman Catholic religion. Official and most common language of those people is English. Self-sufficient Gibraltar benefits from an extensive shipping trade, offshore banking, and its position as an international conference center.
