The Republic of Cyprus is the official name of Cyprus. It is located in the Middle East, island in the Mediterranean Sea, and south of Turkey. In terms of size, it has 9,250 sq km of total area which is about 0.6 times the size of Connecticut. It has 9,240 sq km of land area and 10 sq km of water area. The population of it is approximately 792,604. The population density of it is 85/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 0.522%. 78% of Cyprus people belong to Greek Orthodox religion. Official languages of those people are Greek and Turkish. A former British colony, Cyprus became independent in 1960 following years of resistance to British rule. In 1974, a Greek Government-sponsored attempt to seize control of Cyprus was met by military intervention from Turkey. In 1983, the Turkish-held area declared itself the 'Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus' (TRNC), but it is recognized only by Turkey. The entire island entered the EU on 1 May 2004, although the EU acquis – the body of common rights and obligations – applies only to the areas under direct government control, and is suspended in the areas administered by Turkish Cypriots.
